I don’t use Picasa Web Albums as my main web sharing photo site, but since it’s free I do occasionally archive favorite family photos there.
So anyway, I was just checking out the new features of Picasa 3.0. You can view those features for yourself in the video above, but one cool feature I want to point out is Name Tagging. Yep, it’s about tagging your photos, but it’s a little different.
In this feature, all the photos in your Picasa albums are scanned for face recognition. After the scanning is done, you can tag photos accordingly. On your Picasa home page, you get thumbnails of all your recognized faces in which you click and view individually tagged photos.
It’s an awesome feature; however, I’m not sure why it doesn’t use some sort of smart technology and automatically add your existing tags to recognized faces as they are imported to your Picasa album.
Other than that, though, it’s a great feature. And a bigger plus is that Google says that your tags are never made a part of their search engine unless you choose for them to be.
