One word of warning when selecting primes. Don’t think you just have to get the sharpest prime on the planet. Very often, that is NOT the best prime for shooting portraits where the quality of out of focus areas are concerned. In terms of shooting flat test charts, the lenses that are sharpest all the way to the edge and corners of the field are highly corrected for field curvature. This is great if you’re doing document reproduction or taking high resolution shots of flat artwork. It’s usually not so good if you desire that creamy smooth bokeh in the background for a portrait. All lens designs are compromises. To get one characteristic at its absolute best a designer has to let another characteristic go. Most of those lenses that can make surgically sharp images of flat test charts don’t create the most attractive bokeh.

Often older designs, such as an 85mm f/1.8 introduced before the last ten years or so when flat test chart performance has become the be all/end all of rating lenses, will give much more pleasing bokeh than the latest, greatest 85mm f/1.4. Even very expensive lenses, like Canon’s EF 85mm f/1.2 L is not very good at taking razor sharp photos of flat test charts. It was never designed to do that. In fact, stopped down to around f/5.6, the much cheaper EF 85mm f/1.8 does a much better job for imaging flat subjects. But when you want smooth bokeh, there’s no substitute for the EF 85mm f/1.2 L. That’s what the creators of that lens designed it to do.
