Planning an African photo safari in a few mounts. Ordering some modern equipment and planning on tons of practice before the trip. What they say in the military is equally important in photography – Gun Control requires Practice, Practice, Practice.

I’m a little unclear about where you are talking about. But yes, if you make the aperture smaller you have to increase your exposure to compensate, and if you use shutter speed to do so, that means using a longer shutter speed. Sorry for any confusion.

It is more art than science. But yeah, just look at the horizon line and eyeball something that is about a third of the way to it. If that is unworkable, then just make it something closer to you than to the horizon.

What does that mean?
a) If the distant object is 9km away, estimate 3km away and focus there? or
b) Look at the scene (frame) and focus at what is a third from the bottom?

If you are making your aperture smaller don’t you have to decrease your shutter speed to let in more light?

It gives a perfect starting point before I start adding camera movements to get everything in focus. It’s called DoF Calc. Highly recommended.
