a very valid and interesting article… i like to position my subject in from of a daylight source to get beautiful diffuse lighting. i have achieved some startling, results, but pleasing… most f my subjects hava dark skin, so shadows need lightening in the post processing stage…. Congratulations <3

How about inside an ice rink? I have a new Nikon D3400 and i’m only learning for my own personal use. My son is a hockey player and I’d like to get better shots brightening up the white balance…I’ve played around with the ISO settings, on manual, also exposure settings, and i keep the flash off due to the fact they are in the middle of a game and i don’t want to distract them – thanks for any help….

Great post. I like playing with the light, ambient light. Less flash, no flash during indoor portrait. It’s gentle and smooth and I like it. Especially in black and white portrait

But what about when you are in a room at night with only the standard house hold light in the centre of the room. And you need to take a photo of a person or a group in a hurry. You have just a DSLR with its built in flash. What would you do?

I like the information but the two things missing from the advice are 1) where lamps are placed distance wise from the subject and 2) what kind of a bulb is used for the lighting frosted or clear? I’ve had mixed results using common lamps for portraits. My results don’t have the dispersed lighting shown in these images leading me to think about putting the shades back on.

This is a pretty good article. It has been a while since there has been a
good one. He should have shown a diagram
of the light placement instead of showing a photo of the subject. Most of the articles on here seem like they
are written by the same person probably due to overly aggressive editing. This article is refreshingly unique in
style.

I love natural light portraits and have done quite a few with success. I also find a silver reflectorvery helpful as well. Good article.
