Revising your older shots will help you prepare for the next competition.

I entered a photo contest and am 1 of 20 finalists for the Auduence Favorite category. Titled “Paris on the Potomac” it was limited to amateurs in Washington, DC, and photos must have been taken in DC. Fair enough. In looking at the other 19 finalists, while some of the photos were really nice, frankly they could have been taken anywhere (a French pastry shop, a nice French-influenced building, a French parterre garden, etc.). Mine was the only one with a definite Washington DC identifier: the US Capitol dome in the background of a lovely fountain by the French sculptor who later designed and sculpted the Statue of Liberty. I submitted 3 versions of the same photo (black and white, late afternoon sun, evening with lights on). The contest sponsors chose the black and white I suspect because another photo included the same fountain, but with a glass botanical garden in the background. Again, it could have been taken anywhere. I invited many family members and friends to participate and included how to vote. One of the people I invited even shared it with her Facebook circle, for more exposure. Results aren’t in yet, but win or lose, I’ve gotten lots of nice feedback from those who did vote and was really honored to be 1 of the final 20.

Ok….

Personally I think contests are worth it just to push yourself that much harder. While you may not actually win, the experience can be worth it. Here’s a nice list I found of 2016 contests to enter for anyone interested: https://www.format.com/magazine/resources/photography/best-photography-contest-prizes-2016

It is organized by Kanakia group to provide a great platform to amateurs like me to showcase their talent to the world. I have been taking quite few images keeping in mind their base theme Mumbai and guidance of yours will definitely help me to work even better. If it interest you, you can also participate and post your images with the hashtag #mumbaimerijaan on their facebook page.

This fires your enthusiasm, and critically, your imagination, and produces much better imagery more suited to the theme. These images tend to win more often than the images in your stock which you think “should be okay” for the comp theme.

I don’t know why everyone is going for free competitions or even worst, competitions where is included public voting? From my experience, serious International Competition include submission fees (which makes absolute sense to me), great exposure, high quality judges and awards.
